Explore Vinön the gem of Lake Hjälmaren

Vinön the largest island in Lake Hjälmaren and a little paradise for those who want to enjoy beautiful nature, refreshing swims, and, not least, cozy concert evenings at the inn.

You Vinön by boat or by Vinön the ferry from Hampetorp. Once there, you can easily get around on foot or by bike along the small roads. The island is about 6 miles in circumference and is home to roughly 100 year-round residents. In the summer, many summer visitors also come out to their cottages. 

If you’d like to rent a bike while you’re on Vinön , you Vinön do so at the ferry terminal. You can find information about bike rentals on Vinön’s website.

If you prefer to get around on foot, you can choose a 4.5-kilometer hiking trail. It runs right along the western shoreline and offers beautiful views of both the forest and the lake.

Are you looking to go swimming and relax on the beach? Then head to the northern swimming area, located on the other side of the island from the ferry terminal. Here you’ll find a lovely beach and access to barbecue areas. Restrooms, trash cans, and parking are also nearby.

Food, ice cream, and island-baked goods

During the summer, Vinön offers an Vinön wide variety of options. Settle in for some delicious, locally sourced food atVinöns Värdshus. Enjoy lunch, book a shrimp feast, or attend a crayfish party. Savor a game dinner—or why not try the locally caught Hjälmar goose? The inn is open during the summer and on select weekends throughout the rest of the year. 

New for 2026 is Vinön’s Ice Cream Café, located right next to the inn. They serve both soft-serve and scooped ice cream, as well as coffee and homemade baked goods. The Ice Cream Café is open every weekend in May and every day throughout the summer.

If you’re in the mood for a light lunch or a coffee break,Café Bakfickan is a cozy option. The menu changes from week to week, but there’s usually everything from hot dishes and baked potatoes to pies, soup, and waffles to choose from. Don’t missVinöbagarn, which offers breakfast rolls and Vinö bagels. And if you’re really hungry, try the “Dundermackan” with all the fixings. Open every day this summer except Wednesdays, starting June 13.

Flea markets and farm stands

On Vinön a number of small shops where you can discover unique items. LikeTröskverksbón—a (usually) unstaffed consignment shop. It’s typically open every day during the summer. There’s also a flea market at Café Bakfickan. Another hot tip is to keep an eye out for small flea market tables that pop up here and there on the island during the summer.

AtHjälmarfrukt, you can buy local produce from the waters of Lake Hjämaren. For example, they almost always have cooked crayfish. Hjälmar pikeperch is available while supplies last. And sometimes they have smoked eel and perch. 

You’ll find even more locally sourced products atNygårds Rökeri & Delikatesser—with wood-fired smoking, a sourdough bakery, a general store, and seating both indoors and outdoors. Here you can buy smoked fish and meat, KRAV-certified eggs from Berga Gård, and freshly baked bread. They also bake sourdough pizzas from time to time, so be sure to follow Nygårds on Facebook.

At the Tröskverksbón flea market, you can find some great bargains.

Concerts all summer long

"Summer on Vinön" is the collective name for the series of concerts taking place at Vinöns Värdshus all summer long. In 2026, you can catch performances by Uno Svenningsson, Emil Assergård, Hästpojken, and Timo Räisänen, among others. Each concert offers a combination of music, food, and a great atmosphere. You can add the concert menu when you buy your ticket—or check out the barbecue menu when you arrive for the concert.

A great tip is to take the bus to Vinön the concerts. Länstrafiken’s Summer Bus runs all the way from Ånnaboda to Vinön, via downtown Örebro, even in the evenings.

Activities and meeting places

The Vinön Cultural and Local History Association organizes fun activities at Vinön’s old school all year round. You can checkthe “Ö-bladet” section on Vinön’s websiteto see what’s coming up. There’s also a small museum and a playground next to the school.

The association also has amission houseacross the street that you can rent for your own use. It can be used for everything from exhibitions and conferences to weddings and other celebrations.

Stay on Vinön

Vinön a variety of options for those looking for a place to stay. Here you can rent a bed and breakfast,cozy cottages, anda country villa.

If you're staying at Vinöns Bed & Breakfast, we recommend renting the wood-fired sauna located down by the harbor. You can also rent a boathouse for a small party or dinner. If you're traveling with a dog or other pet, Lilla Stugan is a great option.

You can also stay atHampetorp Campground, located just a short walk from the ferry terminal in Hampetorp. The campground offers both campsites and cabins, as well as a restaurant, a snack bar, mini-golf, disc golf, and rowboats. And it’s close to Vinön, of course.

How to get to Vinön

By boat. Vinön centrally Vinön in Lake Hjälmaren. There is a guest harbor on the northern part of Vinön, about two kilometers from the Vinön Inn.

By ferry. From Hampetorp, you can take the ferry across Vinöleden. The trip is free, five kilometers long, and takes about 30 minutes. You can bring your car as well, but the easiest option is to park in Hampetorp and cross on foot—perhaps with your bike in tow.

Take the bus to the ferry. In the summer of 2026, you can take Länstrafiken bus line 890 to the ferry. It runs from Ånnaboda in Kilsbergen to the ferry terminal in Hampetorp—and passes several hidden gems, including central Örebro, along the way.
