For four days at the end of January, the streets of Örebro come alive with activity, aromas, and encounters. It’s time for the Hindersmässan—a beloved tradition that actually dates back to the Middle Ages. Here you’ll find a unique blend of history, local culture, and the joy of a modern market. And the wonderful atmosphere? That’s a bonus.
Market Opening Ceremony
In conjunction with the opening of the Hinders Fair on the first day, there is the traditional opening ceremony. It usually begins with a mass at St. Nicholas Church, after which the proceedings move outside for the opening address. Finally, the fanfare sounds from City Hall—and the Hinders Fair is officially opened.
A folk festival with a long tradition
The Hindersmässan has its roots in the market where miners from the surrounding area used to come to Örebro to sell iron. Today, the ironworks is a thing of the past, and the Hindersmässan has become a community festival that attracts both Örebro residents and visitors. Here you can browse among hundreds of market stalls filled with everything from local crafts and delicacies to clothing and decorative items.
An experience for both children and adults
For the kids, there are carousels and activities, while adults can enjoy food from around the world and discover unique treasures. Don’t forget to stop by one of the many food stalls to sample classic market delicacies like kolbullar, fresh licorice, and hot mulled wine.

The Hinders Mass 100 Years Ago
A market with a long tradition, as I said. Just look at this delightful photo from the Hinders Fair in 1910. Little Inga Tegner is two years old, and her brother Harald is five. Here they are trying out trumpets together with their nanny, Dagmar Carlsson.
