The Svartån River runs along the edge of the park, and in the middle of the river lies Stora Holmen, an island that’s a little paradise for families with children. On the topic of children, Stadsparken also offers a large play area with three play landscapes adapted for different ages (including a spray park with water play, which is especially perfect on hot summer days). And in Stadsträdgården, you’ll find food and coffee, a greenhouse, and an eco-shop—as well as occasional small-scale concerts.
Visit the various gardens in Stadsparken
The City Park is located along the Svartån River, on the same route as two of Örebro’s major attractions: Örebro Castle and Wadköping. The park is known for its beautiful flower beds and has been named one of Sweden’s most beautiful parks on several occasions.
Blomstergården’s hundreds of different varieties of bulbs and pansies bring color to spring, before the summer plantings take over. The plants are clearly labeled with their names, making it easy to take inspiration home for your own window boxes and flower beds.
In Rosengården, you’ll find nearly a hundred different varieties of old-fashioned roses and about seventy more modern varieties. Climbing roses, clematis, honeysuckle, and pipranka climb up the pergola.
The themed garden in Magnolialunden consists of several garden rooms surrounded by various types of magnolias. Here you’ll find, for example, the English flowerbeds, filled with perennials and the Romeo and Juliet puppet theater statue by Erik Grates, and the Japanese-inspired garden.
The Rhododendron Park boasts some forty varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as perennials that thrive in the same environment. It also features southern beech, Chinese redwood, and several other conifer species.
The herb garden features about a hundred different herbs that have been used throughout history as spices, medicinal plants, and fragrances. There is also a statue of Cajsa Warg, a native of Örebro.
There are several sculptures and installations throughout the park that are well worth a closer look. And don’t miss Vattendraget, a feature with a pond, waterfall, rocks, and plants, designed by visual artist Helge Lundström.
Outdoor stage, summer café, and tennis courts
Not everything in Stadsparken is about flowers and greenery. There’s an outdoor stage here, where events like the Örebro City Festival and the Request Concert offer a variety of musical experiences. And right next to the stage is the summer café Ice Cream & Coffee.
If you’re in the mood for a game of tennis, you can reserve one of Stadsparken’s two tennis courts. If you’d rather challenge your friends to a game of rounders or kubb, Skytteparken’s large green spaces—right next to Stadsparken—are perfect.
The City Park's Large Playground
The playground in Stadsparken is bustling with activity all year round. There are three different play areas for different age groups: Lilla Wadköping, featuring a playhouse and a farm setting; Sprayparken, with fountains and showers; and the more traditional play area with slides, swings, a climbing frame, and a zip line. Once the little ones have finished playing here (which can take a while, mind you...), just head on over to one of Örebro Municipality’s other 170 play areas.
Stora Holmen attracts visitors with play areas and animals
Stora Holmen is the children’s island, located in the heart of Örebro. Here you’ll find a mini-zoo with a petting zoo, a pedal car track, play shops, a miniature train, and, last but not least, the Bäverkullen playground with water play, wooden walkways, a buddy swing, and much more.
You can reach the island by taking the Viktoria rowboat ferry from Stadsparken (operates during the summer) or by crossing one of the two bridges—one from Fredsgatan and the other from the University Hospital area.
The City Garden with food and drinks—and concerts
Right at the entrance to Stadsparken (if you’re coming from the direction of the castle) is Stadsträdgården. Here you can enjoy delicious food and drinks at Stadsträdgården’s restaurant and café, pick up something from the bakery, and, in the summer, enjoy music in a fantastic setting. Keep an eye out for upcoming concerts in 2026 on Stadsträdgården’s website.
The City Garden also features greenhouses, an exhibition hall, conference rooms, organic gardens, and demonstration facilities. At the Eco Shop, you can purchase organic, fair-trade, and/or locally produced food and everyday items.
Wadköping's wooden neighborhood is right next door
At the far end of Stadsparken (if you’re coming from the direction of the castle) lies Wadköping, a charming little neighborhood with wooden houses bustling with life and activity. Here you’ll find museums, exhibitions, restaurants, cafés, an ice cream stand, a general store, a play barn, unique shops, and fascinating craft workshops. Simply put, there’s plenty to experience—for both young and old.
The History of the City Park
On January 29, 1862, Auditor M.E. Bäckström founded the Tree Planting and Gardening Association in Örebro County. The following year, the association purchased just over nine hectares of land, and in April 1864, a head gardener was hired. That fall, led by the head gardener, the association began purchasing plants. The first greenhouse was built in 1871.
Just over 60 years later (in 1933), the Örebro City Council decided to build Stadsparken based on a proposal from the gardening association. And that’s how it all began.
Since 1971, the municipality of Örebro has been responsible for the area. Every year, the municipality allocates funds to the former gardening association, which is now called Örebro County Gardening Corporation.

The City Park is centrally located in Örebro, right next to the Svartån River. It’s easy to walk here from downtown. Just follow the riverside promenade from the castle, along the Svartån River, until you reach the park. You’ll also see the City Garden a little to the right.
By car
If you're driving, head toward the city center first, then follow the signs to Wadköping and Stadsparken. There are parking spots along the streets next to the park, as well as at Wadköping and Hamnplan.
By bus
