Paddle down the Svartån River through Örebro

The Svartån is an 80-kilometer canoe route from Lake Ölen in Värmland to Örebro. The route begins at one of Kilsbergen’s rugged forest lakes. It passes the fish- and bird-rich lakes Toften and Teen on its way to the wilderness-like swampy coniferous forests north of Skagerhultsmossen. The river then flows through a varied, gently rolling agricultural landscape on the edge of Kilsbergen before turning eastward, out onto the flat Närke plain.

Suggestions for overnight canoe trips

The Svartån River is easy to paddle and ideal for beginners. A suitable two-day trip can start at the Stockås Bridge, with an overnight stay at the Lekeberga-Sälven rest area, and continue on to Örebro. For a two-night paddling trip, you can instead start at Svartå Herrgård.

A 41-mile canoe trail just around the corner from Örebro

Bergslagen is home to several beautiful rivers and streams that attract paddlers from near and far. The Svartälven is the longest and originates in Värmland, while the Nittälven is narrow and winding. The wilderness is always close by as the river flows through roadless terrain. The Rastälven takes you past small forest lakes, and the Järleån takes you past Sweden’s oldest railway station. Several of these canoe routes are well-suited for beginners and families seeking adventure. Welcome to canoeing in Örebro.

Travel blogger's tips

Last Friday, I went kayaking on the Svartån River

"Less than two hours after boarding the train at Stockholm Central Station, I arrive in Örebro. I get to see the famous castle and experience the city’s cultural life to the fullest, but I also hike through the forests of Kilsbergen, bike around the flat landscape by Lake Tysslingen, and kayak on the Svartån River out toward Lake Hjälmaren."
