Örebro in the World of Books

Maria Gripe

Children's book author Maria Gripe lived in Örebro when she was a child. Places and people from Örebro make brief appearances in some of her books, such as the witch Flaxa Mildväder in *Glasblåsarn's Child*. Flaxa was a real person who lived in Örebro in the 1940s. 

Jeremiah in Tröstlösa

The poet Jeremias in Tröstlösa, whose real name was Levi Rickson, is known for his poems written in his own variation of the Närke dialect. The old Jeremias Bakery in Wadköping was his former home and was, of course, named after him. Today, the building houses Café Karsbjer.

Hjalmar Bergman

The author Hjalmar Bergman grew up in Örebro and lived, among other places, in the building known as Borgen (now Home Hotel Borgen). He coined the name Wadköping for his fictional town, where many of his stories are set, such as *Markurells i Wadköping*. 

Håkan Nesser

Crime writer Håkan Nesser was born in the neighboring town of Kumla, a fact that has also left its mark on his writing. Many of the locations in his books are drawn from his home region, such as "And Piccadilly Circus Isn't in Kumla." 

Anna Jansson

The "Queen of Crime" Anna Jansson has also drawn inspiration from her hometown for her literary mysteries. For example, the book series featuring Detective Inspector Kristoffer Bark is set in her hometown of Örebro. 

Maria Lang

Another mystery writer, Maria Lang, has both drawn inspiration from and written about the Örebro region. She grew up in Nora, which served as the model for Skoga, the setting for many of her books. In Nora, there are guided murder mystery walks featuring stories from her books.
