More magnificent castles in Örebro County

Published September 3, 2020 / Updated April 17, 2026
In its heyday, Kägleholm Castle was a magnificent structure just outside Örebro. Had it not burned down on that fateful day in 1721, it might very well have been Örebro’s second most magnificent castle. But which building actually holds that title? Two candidates stand out among Närke’s relatively large number of stately manors. Two castles as different as castles can be.

The medieval castle of Göksholm

At first glance, the rustic medieval castle of Göksholm looks mostly like a large whitewashed house. But appearances can be deceiving. At 800 years old, the castle is Sweden’s oldest private residence. For many years, it was owned by the Natt och Dag family, perhaps best known in local history for Måns Bengtsson Natt och Dag, the man who slew Engelbrekt.

The historic Boo Castle

Boo Castle isn’t quite that historic. However, the estate has been passed down within the same family since the 18th century. The current main building was completed in 1882, and those with a passion for castles will truly find it to their liking here. Turrets, towers, battlements… All the typical castle features are present. Moreover, it is surrounded by a beautiful manor landscape featuring buildings in the ancient Greek style, such as the church and the church school with their imposing columns.

Kägleholm Castle

The magnificent castles of that era outside Örebro

Kägleholm would surely have been one of Örebro’s biggest tourist attractions if fate hadn’t had other plans.
