Discover Tiveden National Park

Published August 20, 2020 / Updated January 27, 2026
Tiveden is a forest region that straddles the counties of Närke and Västergötland. Here, the forests are dense, the cliffs dramatic, and the lakes enchanting. Hike, run, bike, ride a horse, or swim your way to your very own Tiveden nature experiences.

Red roses and hidden caves

Tiveden is a forest of legends and myths. Fallen boulders form caves, the moss lies untouched, and the forest is left to its own devices. For a short time each year, you can also find the red water lily in the forest lake Fagertärn. In Tiveden National Park, people believe they can find gnomes and other creatures in the enchanted forest. Early in the morning, the elves are said to dance, and the call of the black-throated loon can be heard echoing across the lakes on summer evenings.

Are there elves and spirits in Tiveden National Park?

Experience Tiveden even outside the national park

Hike, bike, or ride through one of southern Sweden’s wildest forests and explore the cultural landscapes between Lake Vättern and Lake Värnen at the same time. For example, the section of the Bergslagsleden trail between Tivedstorp and Stenkällegården runs through the national park. But remember that Tiveden is more than just the national park! You can find more tips on what to experience in the Tiveden area at Visit Tiveden.

Experience a real fairy-tale forest that brings to mind trolls and elves! Here you can hike through the woods and finish with a swim at the stunning Vitsand beach. Stay a while to watch the sunset and have the beach all to yourself for a moment.
