The top three best birdwatching spots in Sweden
Is there anything more delightful than listening to the birds’ serenade in the early morning, or hearing the blackbirds at dusk? Whether you’re a birdwatcher or not, you have a very good chance of enjoying the birds’ song in Örebro.
“We birdwatchers here in Örebro are very fortunate. We have three of Sweden’s absolute best birding spots,” says Kent Halttunen of the Närke Ornithological Society. Kent is referring to Kvismaren, Tysslingen, and Oset/Rynningeviken, which are popular stopover sites for birds. Many birds—and birdwatchers—gather here every year. But there are also other great spots for birdwatching. Per Wedholm, municipal ecologist for the City of Örebro, recommends the somewhat forgotten Boglundsängen Nature Reserve:
– The best time to go birdwatching in Boglundsängen is mid-April. The advantage here is that you can get quite close to the birds. Last but not least: the small and charming Ekeby Ekhage nature reserve, which is just as suitable for birdwatching as it is for a lovely spring outing in the countryside, he suggests.
1. The Branch Cutter
Kvismaren, southeast of Örebro, is one of Sweden’s most important breeding and stopover sites for wetland birds. Some are regulars, while others are much rarer and long-distance visitors. The area features two birdwatching towers (one of which is wheelchair-accessible), a picnic area, and parking.
2. The Whisper
Tysslingen is a beautiful bird-watching lake west of Örebro. The nature reserve features a bird-watching tower and a visitor center with a café. There is also a lovely bike path around the lake, called “Tysslingen runt,” which offers sweeping views of the Närke Plain.
3. Ekeby Oak Grove
The Ekeby Ekhage Nature Reserve is just a short bike ride from Örebro. In the spring, you’ll find fields of bluebells and wood anemones among the gnarled oaks and delicate hazel blossoms. The area also boasts a rich variety of birdlife, including the Eurasian pygmy owl, stock dove, and lesser spotted woodpecker. Ekeby ekhage is located next to the Hemfjärden Runt bike trail. If you’d rather take the bus, you can take regional bus 800 toward Odensbacken and get off at the Champinjonvägen stop in Ekeby-Almby, right next to the reserve.
4. Oset and Rynningeviken
Oset and Rynningeviken are among Sweden’s classic birdwatching spots. During the 1990s, Oset and Rynningeviken were restored in several phases. What was once a landfill and a military training area has been transformed into a nature reserve and a popular recreational area. Birdwatching towers, viewing platforms, picnic areas, and miles of bike paths make Oset and Rynningeviken a favorite spot among Örebro residents.
5. Boglundsängen Nature Reserve
The Boglundsängen Nature Reserve, located near Eurostop, is an often-overlooked birdwatcher’s paradise. It’s easy to get here by bike, car, or bus. The reserve features an accessible birdwatching tower, an easy 3-kilometer loop trail, and two picnic areas.
