Kilsbergen
Enchanting views and a hundred lakes await you in Kilsbergen. Here you’ll find caves, ponds, and historical ruins. Plus, miles of trails and paths. The Blue Mountains—as they’re also known—offer everything from peaceful nature experiences to action-packed outdoor adventures, no matter the time of year. You can also explore one of Sweden’s many national parks and some fifty nature reserves here.
Ånnaboda Outdoor Hub
The heart of Kilsbergen’s outdoor life is Ånnaboda. Here you can swim, go mountain biking, pick mushrooms, go canoeing, or set out on the hiking trails. Between the different sections, you’ll find rest areas and rest huts—perfect when your legs need a well-deserved rest and your stomach craves a snack.
Ånnaboda is also a favorite outdoor destination in the winter. When the temperature drops, you can lace up your skates and glide across the ice. Have a sled race with the kids and drink hot chocolate from a thermos. Cross-country skiers flock to the popular ski trails here—and for the brave, ice fishing awaits.

Rusakulan – Örebro’s best vantage point
From the summit of Rusakulan , the enchanting forests of Bergslagen, the entire city of Örebro, and Lake Hjälmaren lie at your feet. From here, you can also catch glimpses of both Västmanland and Östergötland in the distance. Before the leaves come out, you can even spot a total of 21 church steeples from the lookout point. Bring binoculars, a snack, and make your way up to the crest of Kilsbergen, where one of Närke’s most magnificent views awaits.

Tysslingen Bird Lake
On the edge of Kilsbergen lies Tysslingen, a lake popular with birds. This shallow lake attracts both rare and common species—and is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature photographers alike. In the spring, swans often stop here, and as summer approaches, yellow wagtails, meadow pipits, skylarks, and crested larks nest in the meadows along the shore.
In addition to birds and birdwatching towers, there is a small bookstore, an art gallery, and a small museum. And—an exhibition of birdhouses that shows how different species like to nest.

Hjälmaren awaits
Lake Hjälmaren isn’t just a sight to behold. It is Sweden’s fourth-largest lake by surface area, with a total of 357 kilometers of shoreline and 1,280 islands. The lake spans three provinces and offers everything from high-energy activities to scenic experiences.
Sweden's tastiest pikeperch?
Lake Hjälmaren is also home to the Hjälmar pikeperch, a local delicacy served at several restaurants both around the lake and throughout Örebro. Katrinelunds Gästgiveri & Sjökrog, listed in the White Guide, is one of them. Here, you can enjoy this mild, tender fish either deep-fried or baked in butter. Served on the pier, you’ll also have the pikeperch’s home waters right at your feet.

Fåran has both sheep and sandy beaches
From Katrinelund, you can kayak to Fåran. The nature reserve consists of two islands connected by a long sandbar in the water—and, as the name suggests, sheep sometimes graze here. You’ll also find magical sandy beaches, almost as shallow as they are long.
Vinön The Largest Island in Lake Hjälmaren
Fåran is also located next to Vinön. Of Hjälmaren’s 1,280 islands, Vinön is Vinön largest and most visited. And it’s no wonder. Here you’ll find a sandy beach, flea markets, a smokehouse with a deli, a small museum, and a cozy craft shop. When your stomach starts to rumble, you can settle in at Vinön’s inn, where you can enjoy a delicious meal and catch a concert. In the summer of 2026, artists such as Hästpojken, Sarah Klang, and Moneybrother are on the lineup.

Picturesque caves, cliffs, and waterfalls
In and around Örebro, you’ll find plenty of towering cliffs and mysterious caves. In this area, the Ice Age has shaped the land and mountains into dramatic cliffs, fissures, and other fascinating rock formations. Many are located in wild nature reserves—others in abandoned mines. Either way, they offer nature experiences straight out of an Indiana Jones movie.
The limestone quarries are at one with nature
In the limestone mines of Tryggeboda, you can explore moss-covered walls and massive mine vaults. During the 19th century, miners quarried limestone here. Today, only the vaults remain, almost completely overgrown with vegetation. On the walls, you can still read all the names and dates that the workers carved into the rock, as traces of the hard life in the mines.

Sveafallen – Giant's Kettles and Ronia the Robber's Daughter
Is there anything that evokes wild winds and spirits more than Sveafallen in Degerfors? Probably not—and that’s likely why Sveafallen was chosen as a filming location when Netflix produced its *Ronia the Robber’s Daughter* series. The nature reserve offers untamed wilderness, with hiking trails that take you through deep forests, over rocky outcrops, and into the dramatic cliff walls of Domedagsdalen.
The Ice Age has left clear traces here. As the ice sheets melted, the meltwater carved deep basins into the mountains, known as “giant’s kettles.” For a long time, people believed these were the cooking pots of giants—after all, who else would need to cook in such enormous stone cauldrons?
The Enchanting Skinnarsågsfallet Waterfall
Skinnarsågsfallet is the highest waterfall in Kilsbergen. It is most impressive in the spring and fall, when the water flows most vigorously. The waterfall is located along Göljestigen, a popular loop trail suitable for all ages. During the hike, you’ll also find a peaceful meditation spot and can see parts of 10,000-year-old boulder fields—stone beaches from the Ice Age ocean.

The dramatic cliffs and forests of Amboberget
Mythical birds and majestic cliffs. The Amboberget Nature Reserve’s cliff face stretches for 1.5 kilometers and offers breathtaking precipices and magnificent views. Here, an ancient forest grows, home to pine trees several hundred years old. From the treetops, you can hear the cawing of the legendary raven and the shrill cries of the spotted woodpecker—two birds that people in the past believed foretold bad weather.
The Magical Caves of Skärmarbodabergen
The Skärmarbodabergen Nature Reserve in Kilsbergen is a true adventure playground. Here you can hike through hilly terrain, with plenty of rocky slopes and mysterious caves to explore. Don’t miss the enchanting Lockstenen —a massive boulder balanced over a trail—or the majestic natural formation known as Bergakungens sal for an authentic wilderness experience.
Speaking of wilderness. Since the forest is both old and untouched, it is home to many rare animals, fungi, and plants. Some trails are suitable for children—others offer thrills, steep drops, and challenges.

The Garphyttan and Tiveden National Parks
Garphyttan and Tiveden National Parks are like something out of a fairy tale. Or rather, two fairy tales, given how different they are. While Garphyttan exudes spring blossoms and cultural history, Tiveden beckons visitors into deep forests and enchanting wilderness. Both are located within an hour’s drive of Örebro.
Garphyttan National Park – Cowslips and Traditions
Garphyttan National Park is one of Europe’s oldest. The park is known for its cultural history and its flower-filled meadows, and even today, the natural environment here is maintained according to time-honored traditions. In addition to the carpets of spring flowers, such as lilies of the valley, anemones, and cowslips, there are plenty of lush deciduous forests with beautiful walking paths and hiking trails to explore.
Tiveden National Park is enchanting
Tiveden National Park offers an almost elvish experience reminiscent of Tolkien’s worlds. Here, the wilderness stretches out, with deep forests and dramatic cliffs. Nestled among the overgrown thickets lie moss-covered caves and fairy-tale lakes, including Fagertärn, where the red water lily blooms. And if there’s anywhere you might encounter gnomes, elves, and Näcken himself, it has to be here.
By the way, Tiveden is more than just a national park. So be sure to go horseback riding, biking, hiking, and exploring the nearby cultural landscapes. You can find more activity ideas atVisit Tiveden.

Nature close to the city
In Örebro, nature is always close by. Not only is there always a lush park (or a wooded, floodlit trail) just a stone’s throw away, but you can also easily reach the beautiful Stadsparken and a lovely nature reserve right on the city’s doorstep.
Oset and Rynningeviken – a nature reserve close to the city
The scenic areas of Oset and Rynningeviken are just a ten-minute bike ride from downtown Örebro. But once you’re here, the hustle and bustle of the city feels light-years away. In the summer, you can visit the cows and go birdwatching by the lake. In winter, you can glide across the ice on skates or a kick sled. All year round, walking trails await, taking you through wilderness, wetlands, and pastures—with babbling brooks, forest glades, and ponds along the way.
There are plenty of picnic areas, picnic tables, and rest shelters along the walking trails. If you’d rather have something delicious served to you, you’ll find both meals and snacks at Naturens hus and Stora Hjorttorps gård.

The Majestic City Park
Örebro’s pride and joy, Stadsparken, is a must-see during the summer. Here you’ll find rose gardens, a dreamy butterfly garden, and a Japanese pond that’s a hit with birds. You can also check out exotic plants, a monstera several meters tall, and enjoy both coffee and sourdough pizza at the Stadsträdgården greenhouse café. To top it all off, historic Wadköping and the children’s Stora Holmen are just a stone’s throw away.

Karlslund – Scenic Cultural History
Just outside town, you’ll find Karlslund —a scenic area where parts of it are actually a cultural reserve featuring a manor house, gardens, and industrial history. Here, you can also visit small museums, craft shops, and Tekniska kvarnen. And, of course, pick up some linseed oil paint at Ovolin. There are small swimming spots along the river, and right nearby you’ll find both the creative hub Lindbacka Bruk and the recreational area Hästhagen.
The Åstråket stretches from Karlslund in the west to the Oset Nature Reserve and Rynningeviken in the east . A walking trail (which, of course, works just as well by bike) that takes you from one nature-filled spot to another—via the city center, Stadsparken, Wadköping, and much more.
