The Bergööska House, a listed historic building, is centrally located on the main street in Hallsberg, just a stone’s throw from the train station. It houses the Bergöö Gallery, featuring art by Carl and Karin Larsson, and the Hallsberg Art Gallery. In the warehouse next door, there is a large model railway and an exhibition about the railway in Hallsberg.
In the late 19th century, merchant Adolf Bergöö commissioned the construction of this combined commercial and residential building in Hallsberg. The young architect Ferdinand Boberg designed the building; he would later become one of Sweden’s most successful architects. The building was originally constructed in the “Nordic style” popular in the 1880s, atop the sturdy brick storefront.
Murals by Carl Larsson
Today, most of the residential floor has been restored to its 1889 appearance. The dining room features beautiful murals painted by Carl Larsson, who was married to Karin Bergöö Larsson, the daughter of the house’s owner, Adolf Bergöö.
Karin Larsson is represented by several oil paintings and textiles in the dining room and is showcased as a versatile artist—working in textiles, design, fashion, and visual art—in the so-called Karin Room. Karin Larsson never lived in the Bergööska House herself, but as a child she lived in the White House on the other side of the courtyard.
