The Late Summer Festival is a three-day celebration that transforms the route from Frimis, past the castle, through Stadsparken, and on to Wadköping into one big, wonderful street party. Here you’ll find concerts of all kinds, a food and drink market, a wide range of children’s activities, and much, much more. Read on to learn about some of the highlights. But of course, the best way to stay up to date is to visit the Sensommarfest Örebro website.
Food and drinks are a must at any party
Delicious flavors are a natural part of the Late Summer Festival. For example, it’s time for the tenth edition of the Wadköping Food and Drink Market. All weekend long, market stalls, food trucks, and pop-up restaurants fill the streets and squares of Wadköping’s charming wooden neighborhood. Here you’ll find local ingredients and artisanal foods, ranging from international specialties to Örebro’s own classics.
It’s Ice Cream Festival at the square in Wadköping—featuring five ice cream companies from the Örebro region. Maybe you’ll discover a new favorite? Plus, everyone under 120 centimeters tall gets a free ice cream. By the way, don’t miss Sunday’s preliminary round of the Swedish Outdoor Cooking Championship
For the whole family
The Late Summer Festival is a celebration for the whole family. For children, there’s a special little market, craft stations, fun challenges, kid-friendly stage performances, and plenty of space to run and play. In the large green space at Stadsparken, you’ll also find an entire activity area with lots of attractions and hands-on activities for the whole family.
Right in the midst of the late-summer festivities is also the City Park’s large playground, featuring three different play areas. And then there’s Stora Holmen, of course—the children’s wonderful play island in the Svartån River.
Music is an integral part
There are plenty of musical highlights at the Late Summer Festival. For example, you can bring a picnic blanket and settle in at the “Concert of Your Choice” in Stadsparken to listen to the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and guest artists. You can sing along at Frimis sing-along, listen to Gladys del Pilar and Kevin Walker at the Wadköping Beverage Market, or enjoy the Örebro Big Band at Teaterladan.
Boat Day is part of the Late Summer Festival
Saturday, August 22, is Boat Day in Örebro, a tradition that has become an integral part of the Late Summer Festival. On this day, boats from all yacht clubs on both Lake Hjälmaren and Lake Mälaren are especially welcome—that’s because there are no lock or guest harbor fees for anyone who wants to dock at Örebro Guest Harbor. Right next to the guest harbor at Hamnplan, there’s also a small fair for boat enthusiasts, families with children, and anyone else strolling by.
Looking for more lake life? On August 22 and 23, the cruise ship M/S Gustaf Lagerbjelke will be offering guided lunch cruises on Lake Hjälmaren. It’s a pleasant trip that departs from Hamnplan and lasts about three hours.
Art on the streets and in castles
OpenArt is Örebro’s unique art exhibition, which every other year transforms the streets, squares, and parks in the heart of the city into a vibrant art festival. Along the Late Summer Festival route, you’ll find a wide variety of artworks created by artists from all corners of the world. Discover contemporary art that moves you, sparks your curiosity, and invites conversation and new perspectives.
You’ll find more moving art at Örebro Castle. There, the exhibition “Wonderland” awaits—a fairy-tale world filled with large, colorful images featuring magical creations and enchanting forest scenes. Every detail has been created by British artist and photographer Kirsty Mitchell, all in memory of her beloved mother.
