5 museums for curious kids—and adults

Published May 24, 2022 / Updated March 25, 2026
A childlike sense of wonder has nothing to do with age. Some experiences may be aimed at children but are perfectly suited for adults. And with others, it’s exactly the opposite. Here are five recommendations for museums in the Örebro area that are perfect for curious visitors of all ages.

1. Animals from Around the World at the Museum of Biology

The Karolinska School’sBiological Museum is a treasure trove for animal lovers. Here, in the old school museum, you’ll encounter moose, wolves, and a variety of other stuffed mammals. You can marvel at strange creatures like pufferfish, armadillos, and giant butterflies—and hear the curious story of how an elephant head ended up in a school museum in Örebro. At the Biological Museum, you’ll experience the kind of museum that, before the advent of television, was often the only way to see animals from foreign countries other than in cartoons.

2. Fun with Technology at Tekniska Kvarnen

Karlslund Manor was once owned by Theodor Dieden, a man who wasn’t afraid to try new technology. Among other things, he made sure to build his own power plant so that the cows on the farm had electric light before the people of Örebro did. The farm’s old mill building now houses a technical museum, Tekniska kvarnen, which tells the story of both electricity and many other technical innovations. Here you can try your hand at all sorts of things and learn a lot about technology while having fun.

3. Fly a real flight simulatorat the Arboga Robot Museum

At the Arboga Robot Museum, you can try out a real flight simulator. Step into the cockpit of a real Draken fighter jet and experience what it felt like to fly what was one of the world’s most modern fighter jets during the Cold War. The museum tells the story of Arboga’s history as a manufacturer of missiles for the Swedish Armed Forces, but it also features the nose section of a Viggen aircraft and a J 35 Draken that once flew in the Austrian Air Force.

4. A Fun Historical Tour of Örebro Castle

There are always exciting activities going on at Örebro Castle. Explore the Children’s Tower, try your hand at crossbow shooting, and ride a hobby horse. Elsewhere in the castle, there are often exciting exhibitions and challenges for visitors of all ages. Check out the Örebro Castle website for current exhibitions and opening hours.

5. See all of Sweden at Miniature Kingdom

Just a short trip from Örebro, in Kungsör, you’ll find the miniature world known as Miniature Kingdom. This 170-square-meter kingdom features a model railway set within a miniature world that showcases landscapes and well-known landmarks from across Sweden. For example, you’ll find the Globen, City Hall, and other Stockholm landmarks (look closely and you’ll spot the Jönsson Gang, right in the middle of a heist). Here you’ll find the Steam Hotel, the Skrapan skyscraper, and other parts of Västerås. The Goat of Gävle, the Göta Canal, the Sala Silver Mine... There’s plenty to discover. Örebro is of course included as well, featuring Wadköping and Örebro Castle, among other sights. Curious about more worlds in miniature? Check out these impressive creations.
