1. Outdoor activities in Kilsbergen
Where the coniferous forests of northern Sweden meet the deciduous forests of central Sweden, there lies Kilsbergen. "The Blue Mountains," as they are also known, form a natural border between Närke, Västmanland, and Värmland. The magnificent natural landscape of Kilsbergen is also a popular destination for hikers, runners, cyclists, and swimmers all year round.
Ånnaboda is the hub for outdoor recreation in Kilsbergen. Here you’ll find a pump track, a lake suitable for year-round swimming, ski trails, wind shelters, accessible hiking trails, rest areas, and warming huts. It takes 25 minutes by car from downtown Örebro, and Länstrafiken buses run daily to Ånnaboda, among other destinations.

2. The Bergslagsleden Trail – 280 kilometers of hiking adventures
The Bergslagsleden trail winds its way like a 280-kilometer-long artery from Kloten in the north to Tiveden in the south. The 17 stages offer beautiful Bergslagen nature with vast forests and lakes, as well as historical sites and picturesque villages. 3. Amboberget – a family-friendly cave adventure
Amboberget is located just north of Örebro. Here you’ll find a 9-kilometer hike featuring mysterious caves and breathtaking viewpoints along the way. The Frihetsportalen cave has a crack you can actually walk through—a very Instagram-friendly spot! 4. Oset and Rynningeviken – Nature Close to the City
The Oset and Rynningeviken nature reserves are just a stone’s throw from downtown Örebro—but after the short 15-minute bike ride here, the city’s noise and lights feel far away. What was once Örebro’s backwater—with landfills, industrial sites, and a military training area—has been transformed into a lovely landscape perfect for outings. There are plenty of barbecue areas and picnic tables along the walking trails—and if you’re feeling inspired, you might just find your own perfect picnic spot here. 5. Vinön The Largest Island in Lake Hjälmaren
The largest island in Lake Hjälmaren is called Vinön makes for a lovely day trip from Örebro. Head to Hampetorp, where the free ferry crosses over to Vinön. A good tip is to leave your car on the mainland and rent a bike on the island. Here you’ll find a beautiful hiking trail, swimming spots, a café, a restaurant—and peace and quiet. Tip! 6. Svartån – Paddle between the castle, the town, and the forest
The Svartån River flows through central Örebro and eventually empties into Lake Hemfjärden. Gliding silently and peacefully along the river, under bridges and past walking paths, is a wonderful nature experience that most people will enjoy. Then continue paddling out onto Lake Hemfjärden, where an entire lake awaits you!

7. National Parks Near Örebro
Within an hour’s drive of Örebro, you’ll find two of Sweden’s many national parks: Garphyttan and Tiveden National Parks. They offer completely different nature experiences: the former is known for its beautiful deciduous forest, pollarded trees, and enchanting carpets of spring flowers. The latter is famous for its deep, enchanted forests and mysterious wilderness atmosphere. Visit both and find your favorite!
