Experience the student city of Örebro

Published March 24, 2023 / Updated April 23, 2026
A small city with everything close by. That’s the way it is! In Örebro, it takes barely ten to fifteen minutes to get anywhere, no matter where you’re headed. With a large university, two party districts right in the heart of the city, and nature just around the corner, Örebro is a student city to be reckoned with.

Become what you dream of

Lawyer, teacher, criminologist, or perhaps a culinary artist? Örebro University offers no fewer than 85 different programs and even more courses. In other words, the possibilities are endless! In addition to your studies, you’ll also get to experience authentic student life here. Maybe you’d like to join a club, work out at the campus gym, or get involved with the student union?

The Örebro area also offers plenty of vocational college programs and folk high schools. Check out, for example:

Focus on your studies

A change of scenery is always nice, isn’t it? If you’re tired of your dorm room, there are plenty of places to hang out when you need to study. In addition to the obvious choices— the University Library and the City Library—there are plenty of cozy cafés with free Wi-Fi where you can combine studying with treats and a pleasant atmosphere. Another hot tip is Congrego. It’s like a campus in the middle of town where you can study with a view of the Svartån River.

Socialize and network

Want to take the next step and make new connections? If you’re in the creative field, Creative House is a hub worth keeping an eye on. If you’re thinking about starting your own business, STARTcentrum can serve as a springboard. Looking for a part-time job related to your field of study? Check out Studentuppdrag at the university.

“You are the small yet vibrant city with the blue mountains in the background. You are Fratelli with beef tenderloin pasta and lemonade, a cocktail at Ingeborgs, and a salad at Mocca Deli before a shopping trip down Köpmangatan. You are bike paths all over the city that take you exactly where you want to go. You are beautiful, well-preserved nature. You are a vibrant downtown where people want to be; to hang out, hug, and laugh. You are studying at the university, failing your first exam, and feeling hopeless. You are wanting to preserve what exists, but also to change and develop what is missing. You are the city where I found close friends, whom I always hope to keep close.”

On the bustling Köpmangatan, there are many shops and restaurants to explore.

Break free

Two party hotspots right in the heart of the city. Sweden’s longest square, lined with outdoor dining spots. Cozy cocktail bars with a personal vibe. Örebro’s nightlife is truly buzzing, and there’s no shortage of places for young people to hang out. Here are some of the students’ favorites:

Go live!

Örebro has always been a city of music, and live performances are a natural part of the city’s vibe. Here you can find everything from big shows at Conventum Arena to intimate gigs at the city’s smallest bar, Stå. Every September, the city’s stages are filled with hundreds of artists at the Live at Heart showcase festival, and in the summer, open-air concerts take center stage in places like Wadköping, Brunnsparken, and Humlehagen.

Enjoy a good meal

Maybe Örebro holds the record for the most burger joints per capita? In any case, it’s no problem at all to find a really great burger here. There’s also plenty of Asian and Italian cuisine to choose from. Check out these favorites:

In the summer, Stortorget in the heart of Örebro is teeming with lovely outdoor dining spots.

Active Leisure

Climb, skate, enjoy winter sports, or go swimming. When it comes to staying active, the possibilities are endless. Örebro is home to many fitness centers, swimming pools, and outdoor gyms. There’s even a golf course, practically right in the middle of town. With a vibrant community life, nature always close by, and bike paths wherever you go, it’s easy to enjoy a fun and active lifestyle.

Three practical tips

Örebro Skatepark

Örebro Skatepark is an oasis in the heart of the city, offering a great place to hang out during the summer months. With large street areas and several bowls, it is one of Sweden’s most popular skateparks.

Sörbybacken

At Sörbybacken, you can go downhill skiing or mountain biking. There’s also a stair climb, a fitness trail, an outdoor gym, and a high ropes course.

Boulebar

On Slottsgatan, you'll find the cozy courtyard where Boulebar is located. Bring your friends here for a friendly game of boules, followed by a French dinner.
