Head to the park between Svartån and Olaigatan. Here you’ll find a magnificent view of the castle. If the season is right, the tree canopies burst into a sea of pink blossoms. Here you’ll find the artwork Park Bench by French artist Lilian Bourgeat. It’s exactly what it sounds like—a park bench, but in giant size! Hop up on the bench, kick off your shoes, and let your feet dangle freely for a while.

Cultural routes and historic neighborhoods

Take a stroll along Södra Strandgatan and check out the city’s cultural districts. Here you’ll find the silver-clad Kulturkvarteret, the elegant Örebro Art Museum, and the classically beautiful Concert Hall. These modern buildings stand in sharp contrast to the other structures in the neighborhood—such as the historic Old Post Office, Trinity Church, and Örebro’s own knight’s castle, Home Hotel Borgen, on the other side of the Svartån River.

A reserved figure in a tailcoat

Have you met Örebro’s most modest figure? Dressed in a tailcoat, barely half a meter tall, it stands quietly in a corner, watching over Stortorget. Caring locals make sure the little one has a hat and scarf in the winter, and when it was kidnapped, the people of Örebro rallied to save it. The figure in question is a penguin, created by artist Linnéa Jörpeland. Stop by and say hello to Örebro’s very own penguin, and take the opportunity to look out over the square (which is actually one of Sweden’s longest).

A tree canopy with a touch of history

Take a brisk walk with your morning coffee in hand to Oskarsparken at the lower end of Stortorget. Here you’ll find the Von Aken chestnut tree, which has stood majestically over the park since the 18th century. It now requires extensive support, but remains magnificent and full of life.

Your 15-minute stroll will be even better if you bring a blanket and enjoy your last sip of coffee sitting on the ground beneath the chestnut tree’s massive branches. So who was von Aken? Frans Michael von Aken was a pharmacist appointed by the king as court pharmacist. He held the exclusive right to practice pharmacy in Närke, Värmland, and Loka. Here in Oskarsparken, he cultivated his medicinal plants.
