Many places to play in Örebro
Did you know that Örebro is one of the best places in the country for play? There are a total of 170 playgrounds and play areas throughout the municipality. Some are larger, some are smaller. All are ready for play and fun.
Fun City Park and an island full of play
Stadsparken and Stora Holmen are two places in central Örebro with plenty of play areas. Stadsparken has three different play areas. Lilla Wadköping has a farmhouse feel and cozy little houses to play in. There’s a classic playground with slides, swings, and a double zip line—so kids can challenge each other to see who can go the fastest. There’s also a spray park with various fountains and showers that spray water. Perfect for hot days.
During the summer, you can take the Wictoria rowboat ferry from Stadsparken over to Stora Holmen. The rest of the year, there are two bridges leading to the island. Stora Holmen, or “Children’s Island,” as it’s also known, is exactly what it sounds like—an island entirely dedicated to children. There are play areas here year-round, but it’s especially fun during the summer. Among other things, there’s a mini-carousel, a petting zoo with goats, and a little train that chugs around the island. There’s also a town with pedal cars and a playground, Bäverkullen, featuring a slide, swings, and wooden walkways to run on.
Wadköping – History and Lots of Fun
Another place for play and family fun is Wadköping’s beautiful wooden neighborhood. Right next to Stadsparken, you can visit this small town with its cobblestone streets and red log cabins. Here, children can play in an old-fashioned setting at Lekladan, work at Handelsboden, take care of stuffed animals, and ride a hobby horse. In Wadköping, children can also take an audio tour. During the tour, they’ll get to know the people who lived in the houses, both in the past and today. At certain stops, there’s even a quiz. Tarzan Jungle and Cable Car at Tybbleparken
Tybbleparken and the nearby hill feature large play areas. There’s a “Tarzan jungle” with vines and balance beams, as well as a traditional playground with swings and a zip line. There’s also a pump track and a skate park.
Saxon Park – Fairy Tale Trail and Water Play Area
Saxon Park is a large clearing in the Brickebacken neighborhood. It features swings, a climbing structure, and a water play area. You can also walk the “Adventure Trail,” a fairy-tale-themed path. Along the trail, you’ll find a low-altitude adventure course and “Kojstaden”—a cozy spot in the woods with ready-made treehouses to play in.
Discover the fun play areas in Varbergaskogen
Around Varbergaskogen, there are several play areas suitable for children of various ages. Here, children can play in VOX Park, which features swings, a climbing pyramid, and a low-height obstacle course. From the park, you can also walk along a fairy-tale trail that leads to a frog pond. In the forest, there are also two old military storage buildings that have been decorated with beautiful murals and equipped with various tools for exercise and play, including a climbing wall.
Lots of playtime in Västra Grönpepparparken and Hagen
In Ladugårdsängen, you can visit Hagen and Västra Grönpepparparken. Together, these two parks form the largest park corridor in Örebro. Hagen Park features, among other things, a large themed playground inspired by the old farming community. There’s also a sand and water play area, an orchard, and a frog pond. Västra Grönpepparparken has several play areas for both young and older children. It also features a parkour course and an outdoor gym. Let the kids play to their hearts’ content while you squeeze in a workout.
Swimming Adventures and Cozy Swimming Spots
Örebro offers many different kinds of swimming spots. Take a dip near the city center or in a limestone quarry. Pack a picnic and spend a full day at a cozy swimming spot, or get your heart racing among wild rapids and fast water slides.
Lost City and a Fun Summer Pool
You can experience Sweden’s biggest water adventure at Gustavsvik in Örebro. Step into the jungle at Lost City. Wild rapids, foaming waterfalls, and plenty of high-speed water slides. Thrills at their peak—for young and old alike. If you get hungry, there’s both a restaurant and a café serving lunch and coffee just a short walk away. The menu includes burgers, salads, and plenty of ice cream. Recharge your energy and enjoy even more adventures.
Gustavsvik also has an outdoor pool that’s open during the summer. It features heated outdoor pools, a water play area for the little ones, and a wide slide where several people can ride together. There are grassy areas where you can have lunch or relax. There’s also a restaurant here to satisfy hungry swimmers or those craving a snack. Choose from salads, snack boxes, and ice cream cones.
Would you like to stay? No problem. Right next to the beach is Gustavsvik’s five-star campground. Choose between a cabin, a motorhome, a trailer, or a tent.
Water Play – Perfect for Hot Summer Days
On hot days, it’s nice to cool off. Örebro has several spray parks and water playgrounds, which are perfect for just that. In Stadsparken, there’s a spray park with several fountains and showers that spray water in different ways—expect to get thoroughly soaked.
Do your kids want to play with water without getting wet? Then you should visit a sand and water playground. There are several in Örebro. In Lilla Wadköping ( ) in Stadsparken, there are channels and pumps where children can experiment with the flow of water. On Stora Holmen, there are two pumps and a small stream in the Bäverkullen playground. In Hagen Park in Ladugårdsängen, there’s also a sand and water playground where children can try to transport sand around the playground.
Cozy swimming spots and turquoise limestone quarries
There are several swimming spots in Örebro, both near the city center and a bit further out. They’re perfect for a refreshing evening dip or a full day with a picnic and sun-kissed noses. Take a bike ride to Hästhagen’s swimming pier, about four kilometers from Örebro’s city center. It’s a small swimming spot where you can cool off in the Svartån River. The swimming spot is near Hästhagen, so take the opportunity to play a round of mini-golf or grab an ice cream while you’re in the area.
If you want to swim in turquoise water, you don’t have to travel far from Örebro. The Uskavi limestone quarry is about an hour’s drive from downtown. A hidden gem in Bergslagen. Turquoise-green water framed by high cliffs. Lanna Badgruva and Hästhagsbrottet, about 25 minutes from downtown, also offer clear water. Bike Ride and a Swim in Lake Hjälmaren
If your family wants to go swimming in Lake Hjälmaren, there are plenty of options. You can get there by bike from downtown Örebro or by car. About a 40-minute bike ride from the city center, you can swim at the popular Hjälmarbaden. If you’d like to bike a little farther, it takes about an hour to reach Norra Ässundet. Both swimming spots are also located along the Hemfjärden Runt bike trail—a ride of about four mil, starting and ending in central Örebro. Bike the entire route and take one (or two) refreshing swim breaks along the way.

Is the whole family looking for something fun to do outdoors? There are plenty of outdoor activities in Örebro. The options vary depending on the season, but there’s always something fun to do. Like ice skating, skateboarding, or visiting an outdoor playground.
OpenArt – Colorful Art for All Ages
In the summer of 2026, the OpenArt art biennial returns to Örebro. Works of art of all kinds will fill the city center—and there will also be several activities perfect for families with children. Create your own art tour and explore the artworks on your own, or borrow a “Discovery Kit” from Örebro Konsthall. The kit includes the booklet *Lilla konstslingan*, an art tour tailored for children. The booklet also contains the word puzzle *Konstuppdraget*. Once you’ve solved the word puzzle, hand it in along with your discovery kit at the creative workshop on Järntorget—where a prize awaits. This year, the creative workshop is part of the art installation *Reversed Zoo*. Children of all ages are welcome here to create or borrow props to become part of the art installation. OpenArt runs from June 13 to September 6, 2026.
Ånnaboda – swimming, fishing, and hiking in the summer
About two mil northwest of Örebro, you can visit Ånnaboda, the heart of Kilsbergen. During the summer, Ånnaboda is the place to be if you want to hike or bike. The nature reserve features several hiking trails perfect for a lovely walk. The trails range from 2.5 to 8.5 kilometers in length, all starting next to the Södra Ånnabodasjön swimming area. If you’d like to take a longer hike, stages nine and ten of the 28 mil-long Bergslagsleden trail start or end in Ånnaboda. Stage nine is about one mil long, and stage ten is about 6.5 kilometers.
If you want to pick up the pace and explore Ånnaboda by mountain bike, there are, of course, trails designed for that as well. Ten trails ranging from 3.5 to 37 kilometers, with varying levels of difficulty and elevation gain. Whether you explore Ånnaboda and the surrounding nature on foot or by bike, you can count on beautiful forests and stunning mountain slopes.
At Södra Ånnabodasjön, you can both swim and fish during the summer. There is a large swimming area here with a dock, a wheelchair-accessible swim ramp, and a sandy beach. Dogs can also cool off at a nearby dog swimming area. If the kids want to learn to fish, Ånnaboda is also a perfect destination for an outing. Southern Ånnaboda Lake is home to both natural and stocked fish populations. A paved road runs around the lake, featuring several piers equipped for fishing. Ånnaboda – Go skiing, sledding, and ice skating in the winter
Ånnaboda is a family paradise even in winter. Weather permitting, there are just over four mil of ski trails in the nearby forests. The ski trails vary in length and difficulty. A 2.5-kilometer trail circles Södra Ånnabodasjön and is perfect for families with children. If you’d like to go a bit further, start from Ånnaboda, head north toward Hällsjön, and turn back when you reach Hällsjögrillen. The trip is about 6.5 kilometers.
If the ice on the lake is thick enough, ski and skating trails are also groomed there. Next to the lake, there’s both a barbecue area and a warming hut. So when your stomach starts to growl or the craving for hot chocolate gets too strong, there’s plenty of room for a snack break.
If there’s no snow in sight but you’re still itching to ski, there’s a groomed ski trail you can count on. It’s about 2.5–4.5 kilometers long and is usually open from late November through April. Just a stone’s throw from the lake, there’s also a large sledding hill—a favorite among many Örebro residents. Watch your step on the hill—it can get pretty fast going downhill here. If you’d like to spend several days in Ånnaboda, there are plenty of comfortable lodging options. At Ånnaboda First Camp, you can stay in a hotel, a cabin, or at the campground. There’s also a bistro right next to the campground where you can enjoy a coffee break, have lunch or dinner, or sip a delicious drink.
Lots of fun at Lustiga Landet
In Vintrosa, about a 20-minute drive from downtown Örebro, you can visit Lustiga landet. This outdoor playground puts play front and center. Lustiga landet consists of fun stations set up in a field or in a nearby forest. Find your way out of the maze, climb on the giant’s furniture, or explore the huge spider webs. You can easily spend a whole day here. Bring your own picnic or grab a bite at the café.
Popular Karlslund – Nature Play and Fun Experiments
Karlslund is a popular destination for residents of Örebro. Just a few kilometers west of downtown, you can visit a scenic area with a well-preserved history. In the heart of the area, on a small hill, stands the stately Karlslund Manor, dating back to the early 1800s. At the manor café, open during the summer, you can enjoy a coffee break while taking in the beautiful surroundings.
Once you’ve recharged your batteries, you can visit the Children’s Garden, located right next to the manor house. Here, the children can play freely, surrounded by bushes, flowers, and plants. The garden features various play areas. Among other things, the children can play on the giant’s huge furniture, search for dragon eggs in the wizard’s garden, and try to find their way out of the maze.
Various animals are also hiding in the Children’s Garden—and it’s your job to find them. The tour starts at Anckarsvärd’s warehouse, where you can also learn more about Karlslund’s history. The warehouse is also the starting point for the approximately two-kilometer-long park walk that takes you through different parts of Karlslund. Along the walk, there are signs where you can read and learn about the area’s past.
Karlslund is also home to Tekniska Kvarnen, a museum where electricity and all kinds of other technology set the stage for a fun family day out. Conduct technical experiments and learn about sustainable development in the “Circular Economy Land.” Be sure to check out the model railroad, which depicts the Mälardalen region.
Summer Activities in Hästhagen
At the Hästhagen outdoor recreation area, just a bike ride from downtown, the whole family can enjoy fun activities. Here, you can rent canoes and explore Örebro from the Svartån River, play disc golf, or climb the climbing wall. During the summer, several of these activities are also free for children and teens. How great is that?
If the whole family wants to find things to do for free, that’s certainly possible, too. In Hästhagen, you can challenge each other to games like kubb, basketball, and brännboll—you can borrow a ball or game at the kiosk. There are also two lovely walking trails in and around Hästhagen, perfect for both walking and running.
If you get hungry or feel like a snack during your visit, there are both barbecue areas and a snack bar on the grounds. The snack bar serves both ice cream and light meals. Buy something tasty or bring your own picnic.
Are the kids on summer break, but you have to go to work? No problem—at Hästhagen, they can attend day camp during the summer. It’s a day camp with no overnight stays. During the camp, the kids can try out Hästhagen’s fun activities and take part in other activities organized by the counselors. For example, they can go on a scavenger hunt or play “Gladiators”—or do something else fun.
Orienteering – in the heart of the city or out in nature
Would you like to explore downtown Örebro? Then the Photo Pass is for you. It’s a type of orienteering where you receive a map of the city center with various checkpoints marked on it. You’ll be assigned as many photos as there are checkpoints on the map. Match the right photo to the right checkpoint and enjoy a lovely walk through downtown Örebro as a bonus. The Fotopasset is available for purchase between May 1 and September 30, 2026.
Does orienteering in nature appeal to you more? Then you should get a Naturpass instead. Orienteering checkpoints are set up in several forests in Örebro County. Choose which forest you want to explore and check where you can buy the map for that forest. Then all you have to do is head out. Each Naturpass has different start and end dates, so check carefully how long the one you want to buy is valid for.
Challenge your family at Sörbybacken
A bike ride south of Örebro’s city center takes you to Sörbybacken, an adventure center where your visit will be filled with fast-paced adventures and butterflies in your stomach. Balance among the treetops on one of the high-rope courses or glide along on a zipline. For the little ones (and those afraid of heights), there’s also a low-altitude course. It’s free to use even when the activity center is closed, so the little ones can play here anytime.
In addition to high-altitude activities, Sörbybacken also offers plenty of fun on the ground. Play soccer golf, compete in a multi-event competition, or play soccer with bumper balls. If you have older kids, you can also get a bigger group together and compete in a paintball match.
Want to combine business with pleasure? Sörbybacken is, as the name suggests, a hill. On the hill, there’s a long flight of stairs that leads to a loop trail taking you through the forest and back down to the bottom of the hill. There’s also an outdoor gym right next to the hill. Challenge each other and see who can manage the most laps up the stairs. Challenge or not—it’s a great workout for the whole family.
In Sörbybacken, you can also enjoy a delicious meal or a snack. Try wood-fired pizzas at Sörens vedugn, or choose from a variety of indulgent ice cream creations at the nearby ice cream parlor.
Summer Break in Örebro – The Joy of Movement on Tour
The “Sommarlov Örebro – The Joy of Movement on Tour” event is perfect for children and teens who want to try something new and enjoy having fun during summer break. Here, they can try out a wide variety of physical activities—everything from basketball and track and field to dance and pentathlon. The event is aimed at children and teens ages 6–18 and will be held at various locations throughout the municipality of Örebro. The tour kicks off on Tuesday, June 30, and runs through August 9.
Bike Ride with an Ice Cream Break
Örebro is a bike-friendly city. Örebro is also a city with several cozy ice cream cafes within biking distance of the city center. Take the Skebäcksslingan bike route and stop for some ice cream at Wadköpings Handelsbod. Here you can choose from several kinds of ice cream balls from the local Gó Glass or the popular soft-serve ice cream in a variety of flavors.
If you’d like to bike a little farther, you can head to Ormesta Glasscafé, Glasstemplet in Sommaro, or Sörens Glassbar. At Ormesta Glasscafé, you can enjoy soft-serve ice cream with Danish toppings, including homemade guf, imported sprinkles, and flødeboll. In addition to soft-serve ice cream, they also serve their own homemade ice cream on a stick. Glasstemplet in Sommaro is exactly what it sounds like—a temple full of ice cream. Here, you can choose from 60 different flavors of ice cream balls, soft-serve, and plenty of toppings. Next to Sörbybacken, you can visit Sörens Glassbar and enjoy indulgent ice cream creations and milkshakes. How about a popcorn ice cream with browned butter or a salted licorice milkshake?
Several of the ice cream shops also welcome dogs, so bring your four-legged family members along and enjoy a bike ride and some delicious ice cream stops.
Skate, kick, or bike in Örebro
Skate, bike, or ride a scooter. In Örebro, the possibilities are endless. There are plenty of skateparks, pump tracks, and areas for riding on wheels. Put on your helmet and protective gear—then just go for it.
Örebro is a skateboarding mecca. Just a stone’s throw from downtown lies one of Sweden’s largest and best skateparks— Örebro Skatepark. The skating area covers nearly 2,500 square meters, so there’s room for everyone. The park features bowls, street sections, and obstacles of varying difficulty levels, making it challenging for both veterans and beginners. During the summer, there’s also a kiosk in the skatepark offering light meals, drinks, and other treats. At the kiosk, you can even borrow skate gear—completely free of charge. Perfect for young and old alike who want to give skating a try.
Örebro Skatepark can be considered the hub of skateboarding during the summer, but there are several other outdoor parks to visit. Brunnsparken features a large wheeled sports park, which includes a skatepark. In addition to the skate section, there’s also a concrete park and an asphalt loop with bumps. Tybble Skatepark has been a favorite among many skaters since the 1980s. The park remains popular today, and over time, a pump track area for bikes has been added right next to it.
If you want to skate indoors, Brädcentralen is the place to go. It features 726 square meters of skate space, with obstacles and ramps for all skill levels. There’s also a café here—so you can refuel during a day full of skating. Skating can be challenging, especially for beginners. That’s why Brädcentralen organizes several groups where you can learn the basics. There are groups for girls, families, and adults, among others. In addition to skateboarding, there are several places in Örebro where you can have fun on wheels. Sveaparken has a pump track for bicycles, inline skates, kickbikes, and skateboards. Tybbleparken has a pump track with two different courses: an easier one and a more difficult one. Gustavsviks Camping also has a course designed for pump track riding.
Family-Friendly Nature Reserves in Örebro
Örebro County is home to just over 300 nature reserves and two national parks, all featuring beautiful and diverse natural landscapes. Pack a picnic and head out—there’s plenty to discover here.
Oset and Rynningeviken are located right on Lake Hjälmaren. It’s a family-friendly nature reserve with wide walking paths, picnic areas, and rest huts. Here, you can go birdwatching, ice skate in the winter, or take a walk in the beautiful surroundings—just a few minutes from downtown.
In the Tysslingen Nature Reserve, you can see large numbers of swans in the spring as they stop to rest on the lake during their journey north. In Garphyttan National Park , you can hike along lovely trails and enjoy beautiful views. For example, hike up Svensbodaberget and have lunch with a view of the Närke Plain. Indoor Activities in Örebro
Örebro offers many family-friendly activities, including indoor ones. Visit a museum and learn something new, or let the kids run wild at Barnens torn. Do crafts and get creative at Kulturkvarteret, or take the kids to a children’s movie.
Fun and interesting museums
In Örebro, you can visit several museums that are perfect for the whole family.
A somewhat hidden gem in Örebro is the Karolinska High School’s Biology Museum. It’s located just a stone’s throw from Örebro Castle, and here you can expect to encounter everything from moose to ostriches—and even an elephant’s head. Yes, an elephant’s head—visit the museum and learn how it ended up right here in Örebro. The Biology Museum is open to the public only during the height of summer and the fall break (week 44).
Are your kids interested in trains and railroads? Then you should visit Nora. Here you’ll find a railroad museum, well-preserved station buildings, and much more that’s part of railroad history. At the Nora Railroad Museum, you can see vintage trains, explore various exhibits, and even step aboard some of the cars.
In Wadköping, there are several exhibits that are interesting for both adults and children. The School Museum is located at Handskmakaregården, where you can step into a classroom from the 1920s. Be sure to also visit Borgarhuset, which was Cajsa Warg’s childhood home. Inside the house, you can explore her pantry. Smell Cajsa’s favorite spices, see the first edition of her cookbook, and hear her tell you firsthand what food was like in the mid-1700s.
Children's Movies and Children's Theater
Pop some popcorn and take your seats in the theater. Örebro offers several venues where you can enjoy cultural experiences. At Bio Roxy, you can attend children’s movie screenings. They show films for the very youngest, as well as for slightly older children. The lineup changes frequently, so keep an eye out for the current schedule. At Örebro Teater, there’s always something cultural going on, often with a focus on children.
This summer, you can experience an adventure theater performance in Garphyttan. The show takes place at various locations in the enchanting forests of Kilsbergen, and you’ll walk along trails to get from one location to the next. The Cultural Quarter—Örebro’s cultural hub
The Culture Quarter is a gathering place for just that—culture. With several activities gathered under one roof, there’s plenty to discover here for both young and old. An art gallery, city library, and concert hall. The art gallery offers an open studio on Saturdays and during school breaks. Inside and outside the quarter’s entrance, you can play games, do puzzles and crafts, go to a mini-disco, and participate in graffiti workshops. Read a book together at the city library or enjoy a delicious lunch at the Kulturbistro. Örebro Castle – Play in the Cellar Vaults and Towers
In the Children’s Tower at Örebro Castle, kids can play to their hearts’ content. There are costumes, bowling, and plenty of space for adventures. Here, you can also take on various challenges related to the castle and what the halls are filled with. This summer, the castle is hosting the magical exhibition “Wonderland,” an exhibition that’s perfect for both young and old.
Meet Laban, the Little Ghost, this summer. A thief is sneaking around in the dark cellar vaults. Laban needs your help to save the castle’s treasures before the thief takes them. The treasure hunt is interactive, so you’ll need a cell phone to help Laban. This summer, younger children can also enjoy cozy story time with the Laban book and a visit from Laban at the castle.
Summer Fun at Conventum Kongress
This summer, the whole family can play and have fun at “Best Summer – Summer Vacation Fun” in Örebro. Conventum Kongress has been transformed into a playground paradise featuring a pentathlon, a sea of building blocks, various sports, and lots of other fun activities. In Örebro, families can have fun together in many different ways. Compete together or against each other. Cheer each other on during a race. Work together in an escape room or on a quest.
Different Types of Golf
Play golf together in Örebro. Mini-golf and adventure golf, with discs or soccer balls. You can play classic mini-golf at places like Café Skogen and Örebro Bangolfklubb. Is adventure golf more your thing? Then challenge each other to a match at Hästhagen or at Gustavsvik Campground. At Gustavsvik Campground, the entire city of Örebro serves as your backdrop. Örebro also offers a wide selection of disc golf courses. Hone your throwing skills and try to get the disc into the basket in as few throws as possible. There are disc golf courses in Hästhagen and Brickeberg, among other places. Find more disc golf courses here. If you’d rather use your feet, you can visit Sörbybacken and play soccer golf. Think of it as regular golf, but with a soccer ball.
If you’d like to play on a classic golf course, Örebro naturally has that to offer as well. Here, you can play a round both near the city center and a bit further out. Drive about 20 minutes southwest of downtown Örebro and visit Lanna Lodge. Their parkland course is highly ranked among Sweden’s golf courses. You can find more golf courses here.
Run a race or cheer on the runners
Feel like running? Örebro hosts several races for children and families.
On June 17, with Midsummer’s Eve just around the corner, the whole family can run the Midsummer Run in beautiful Rynningeviken. The start and finish are at Stora Hjortstorps Gård, and after the race, you can stick around for the post-race party. The adult course is 7.2 kilometers, and for the little ones, there’s a 600-meter kids’ race.
